Jimmy Kimmel jokes. Passionate acceptance speeches. Powerful musical performances. the coronation of Everything everywhere at once. Sunday’s 95th Academy Awards broadcast was broadcast to a worldwide audience, and clips from the show were shared on social media. Yahoo Entertainment was one of the lucky few to get a prized ticket inside the Dolby Theater for the festivities, and here are some things you didn’t see on TV.
William is serious
Jimmy Kimmel’s long-suffering television partner, Guillermo Rodríguez, pre-recorded a public service announcement to make sure potential winners stayed snappy with their acceptances in a snippet that played immediately before the show began. “Keep your speeches conscious – [someone off-camera: “concise”] – when the prompter says: ‘Wrap your speech’, wrap your fucking speech!”
In case you’re wondering, Guillermo was in the audience, but on the balcony he’s nosebleed.
All win the clap-o-meter
Beginning with double wins for Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis in the Supporting Actor categories to kick off the show and ending with Michelle Yeoh’s historic win for Best Actress, Dolby audiences went absolutely nuts for Everything everywhere at once, heartily cheering at every opportunity. In addition to his seven leading victories on Sunday, All he was easily a fan favorite in the room.
The little Mermaid the trailer was MIA
While viewers at home were shamelessly blacked out by the new live-action adaptation of the classic Disney cartoon, hosted by stars Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy, theater audiences didn’t get a sneak peek of the trailer. Instead, a “look at future nominees” video and clips of Academy Award-winning student work played.
the star bar
The lobby bar is always one of the busiest places at the Oscars and this year it did not disappoint. During the middle part of the show, several stars made their way to the watering hole for a few drinks and to socialize. Yeoh stopped and gave support to Black Panther star and presenter Danai Gurira. Cate Blanchett enjoyed some alone time, texting on her phone. Seth Rogen and Rian Johnson were also among those who needed a mid-show snack.
that wasn’t jenny
One of the best parts of the night was when Kimmel brought a donkey up on stage and identified it as Jenny, the scene-stealing creature that bites the fingers of The Banshees of Inisherin, to applause from the film’s nominated star, Colin Farrell, who blew a kiss from his vantage point in the front row. “Jenny’s not just an actress, she’s a certified emotional support donkey, or at least that’s what we told the airline to get her on the plane from Ireland. So if you feel upset, you either didn’t win or you’ If you’re anxious or just love mules, feel free to reach out and give her a hug.” Poor me, Banshees Writer-director Martin McDonagh admitted backstage that the real Jenny was still on the Emerald Isle: The Oscars version was a hoax.
A star among the stars
After presenting the Oscar for Best Picture to Everything everywhere at once — and sharing a hug with his Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Quan co-star: Harrison Ford was mobbed by colleagues and fans as he was leaving the theater. Banshees nominee Brendan Gleeson was among those who spent considerable time chatting with Ford. Ford then posed for some good-natured selfies before heading to the Governors Ball. But even though she is one of the biggest movie stars in the world and one of the most popular people at the Academy Awards, Ford still had to show his ticket to get into the after party. Sometimes celebrities are just like us.
