SC denies allegation of using prefixes for women, says it’s for publicity | News from India

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed an appeal that raised the issue that no woman should be required to put prefixes such as “pani”, “kumari”, “mrs” before their names, saying it was all for publicity.
The panel of judges SK Kaul and Amanullah noted that there can be no general order on the matter as it depends on the individual’s choice whether to use the prefix or not.
The attorney acting on behalf of the applicant told the appellate court that he wished to submit additional documents in this case.
“What kind of petition is this? What kind of relief are you looking for?… It’s all advertising,” the juror said.
The Supreme Court has stated that it is up to the person to use the prefix or not.
“You say no woman should be asked to type ‘Ms.’, ‘Kumari’, ‘Ms.'” the bench said, adding “if you suspect someone wants to use it, how can you prevent that person from using it.”
“There can’t be a general injunction in this case because it depends on the individual’s choice whether to use the prefix or not,” the jury said in denying the charge.
