Ralston 5th grader raises $2,000 for grieving teacher

The bond between a Ralston teacher and her fifth grade student is stronger than ever. Janis Rhodes is mourning her child. He passed away recently after battling a rare heart ailment. Rhodes teaches fifth grade at Karen Western Elementary School in Ralston. So far this school year, she’s spent a lot of time outside of class to be with Caden. Rhodes student Case noticed that there had been a struggle about a month before Caden died, and decided she wanted to do whatever she could to help. “I gave her a blanket and I thought it wasn’t enough, so I started a GoFundMe,” Case said. It would be just, not like $2,000. I thought it would be like just a few hundred dollars,” Case said. For Rhodes, the joy of it all is so much more than the money. “It’s more, did she do it out of her compassion and caring for others . Because she showed it to me, I know she’ll do it to other people,” Rhodes said. “I really love her,” Case said of Rhodes. Rhodes said she’ll be back at work Monday. But go back.” She said she doesn’t think she would have accomplished this if it weren’t for her amazing students like Adrianna.

It’s been almost two weeks since Rhodes lost a big part of his world.

Rhodes said, “I think about his smile. To be honest, I think about him at peace now.”

Her five-and-a-half-month-old son, Caden, was suffering from hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

Rhodes said, “He had a life that was full of pain and hospitalizations. He was happiest when he was out and he only got that for a few months.” “In the five and a half months he was alive, he was home for two of them.”

In November, Caden caught a common cold which caused a fever and high heart rate.

“Everything moved very quickly,” Rhodes said.

Caden passed away on 17 November.

Rhodes said, “A combination of all of that, he felt like his heart was doing too much work. His heart was super, super fragile.”

Rhodes teaches fifth grade at Karen Western Elementary School in Ralston. So far this school year, she has spent a lot of time outside of class to be with Caden.

“You’re trying to be there for your son and my two other kids who are at my house and then I’m trying to be there for my students,” she said.

Rhodes’ student, Kess, saw Caden struggle about a month before he died, and decided she wanted to do whatever she could to help.

“I gave her a blanket and I thought it wasn’t enough so I started a GoFundMe,” Case said.

With the help of her mom, Case was able to create a GoFundMe that raised $2,000 for her favorite teacher.

“I just thought it wouldn’t be like $2,000. I thought it would be like just a few hundred dollars,” Case said.

For Rhodes, the joy of it all far outweighs the money.

Rhodes said, “It’s more, what she did to show her compassion and care for others. Because she showed that for me, I know she’ll do it for other people.”

“I really love him,” Case said of Rhodes.

Rhodes said she would go back to work on Monday. She said she doesn’t think she would have accomplished it if it weren’t for her amazing students like Adrianna.
