In case you haven’t noticed the first, oh, 517 times Blake Shelton mentioned him over the last three episodes of season 23, this season is the popular coach’s latest rodeo in The voice. And she’s milking what she hopes will be her farewell victory lap for all she’s worth, throwing every last possible jab at her longtime rival, Kelly Clarkson, and pulling every last dirty trick to recruit singers for her end team.

For example, during the blind auditions on Tuesday, Blake tried to hook up with one contestant, hopeful Olympian Chloe Abbott, by claiming she’s been coaching the US curling team “for a couple of years now.” . An exasperated Kelly gasped rhetorically, “Is there anyone else sick Blake lying? – And in one of the show’s best stunts in recent memory, he summoned host Carson Daly, who came out at just the right moment driving a polygraph machine.

Going into Maury’s “Lie detector determined it was a lie” Povich mode, Kelly hooked Blake and grilled him with questions like “Did you block me this season?” And, of course, a red X-screen, which looked like it was borrowed from NBC’s sister show. america’s got talent – instantly buzzed and flashed the capital letters “FALSE” when Blake denied it. It also wasn’t surprising when Blake’s “absolutely” response to Kelly’s question “Am I really your favorite coach?” query triggered another big red “FALSE”. (Us allknows that rookie coach Niall Horan is his new favorite). And it was really funny when Carson’s question, “Gwen [Stefani] marry you out of pity? — to which Blake responded with a shrug, “Probably” — generated a green “TRUE” result.

“Kelly, Kelly! You should know lie detectors don’t work on me,” Blake chuckled after he finished Kelly’s little stunt, releasing some seemingly legitimate ice rink footage of him attending an Olympic curling practice. “I am the master of lies!”

In another humorous display of Blake and Kelly’s friendship-enemy on Tuesday, when they were discussing teen singer Mary Kate Connor, whom Kelly called a “younger Brandi Carlile,” Blake recalled: “I bumped into Kelly Clarkson at a Brandi Carlile concert 10 years or more ago. 12 years ago…” To that, Kelly replied without missing a beat: “No because you were there! But then she Kelly thought she had gone too far, yelling, “I’m just kidding, I’m just kidding!” and running over to give Blake an apologetic hug. By the end of the day, or at least by the end of the hour-long episode, it was apparent that these two really do care for each other.

In his own moody way, Blake admitted that he missed Kelly when he was left out last season, explaining: “It’s exciting to have Kelly back, because when she’s gone, I really won’t have anyone to really fight with. And when she’s here, the fight is in!” But when Blake was out of earshot, Kelly shared a sweeter sentiment.

“Don’t tell him I said this, but he’s The voice”Kelly said of her co-star. “He is the king of The voice. Hence is It’s going to be very weird when he’s not here. He will be missed by all.”

Oh. When Blake finally sees that footage, I’m sure the dirty cheater will use it against Kelly in some way. But really, Kelly didn’t tell lies. The show just wouldn’t be the same without him. There’s only one more week of blind auditions left before Blake can yell, “My team is full!” for the last time, but below is a rundown of who he, Kelly, Niall and Chance the Rapper recruited on Tuesday, including the team the aforementioned Mary Kate Connor eventually joined.

Kate Cosentino, 23: “I say a little prayer”

This sassy woman with “big girl energy” from a big Italian family has the potential to become annoying in a big way (it seems that being Italian is her entire personality). But her charming, jazzy, Sara Bareilles-esque acting and self-described “clown couture” of hers made her an “out-of-the-box star,” according to Niall. “The fact that you chose that song means that your standards are [high]said Niall apparently smitten with Kate’s version of Bacharach/Warwick, while Chance called Kate “great” and “so much fun,” and Kelly loved her “Wayne’s World guitar” and melodious, “lullaby” voice. ”.

Who turned? Kelly, Chance and Niall.

Result: Team Niall. Kate explained that the Irish and Italians have to stick together, and that’s what their ‘ancestors’ would want. (Apparently Kelly’s “30%” Irish blood wasn’t enough.)

Chloe Abbott, 24: “How deep is your love”

This competitive track and field athlete, who hopes to qualify for the 2024 Olympics, brought her training to the Voice stage, exhibiting what Chance noted was “incredible breath control” in her sultry Bee Gees cover art. Chance also described the Detroit singer as a (clearly winning) combination of Anita Baker and Norah Jones.

Who turned? Just random, surprisingly. He was delighted, of course, calling Chloe “the artist he was looking to find.”

Result: Team Opportunity. “I think he would have excelled in from no one team, but I’m glad she’s in the victorious team,” Chance joked, proving he’s also a fierce competitor, even if he’s not trying to join the USA curling team.

Marcos Covos, 30: “Your Sun You”

After enjoying an idyllic, music-filled childhood, Marcos was disowned by his family when he came out as gay in high school, which “made the pursuit of music painful, because it would remind me of the previous life I used to have.” . Eventually, Marcos and his parents made up, and as he strutted toward the Voice stage on Tuesday, he declared: “I have never acted like myself; This is the first time in my life that I feel exactly who I am and proud of who I am.” There was a sense of triumph, joy and release in her performance, which Kelly called “beautiful” and “passionate”.

Who turned? Kelly, who has always had a soft spot for Latino and Spanish singers… and seemed to think this was a lock, until the crafty Blake infuriatingly pushed his button during Marcos’ final note.

Result: Team Kelly, of course. “I knew there was no way I was going to beat Kelly on that, but it made me happy to see her get mad at me for a second,” Blake admitted with a laugh.

Tiana Goss, 29 years old: “Emotion”

Tiana tried out for season 22, but “it didn’t do as well as I wanted it to. … Honestly, it was a bummer.” However, as someone who in 2020 was diagnosed with a form of epilepsy that can actually affect her recollection of her lyrics, Tiana is clearly not the type to give up. This time, she “picked the perfect song that showcased the best bits of her voice,” according to Niall (last year’s Nelly Furtado cover choice was ill-advised), and it got a whole lot better.

Who turned? Only Niall, who clearly has a soft spot for suave female singers. I was surprised that Chance held back, because he looked very intrigued throughout Tiana’s Samantha Sang cover.

Result: Team Niall. “I was waiting for you!” confessed Tiana, who seemed as delighted as Niall by this result. “She was looking for some character, and she’s got it in spades,” Niall said, calling Tiana a “game changer.”

Mary Kate Connor, 17: “Stars”

a fan of The voice Since she was a child, Mary Kate first heard her song Blind Audition, a folk ballad by Grace Potter, while watching the show. Personally, I don’t think the Mary Kate version shot. enough — her performance was too polite and tentative, lacking Grace’s raw energy — but this theater girl delivered a pretty, polished, professional voice. Kelly loved “how beautiful and cuddly she was,” and Blake described Mary Kate’s “Appalachian sound” as “soft and angelic.”

Who turned? Blake and Kelly.

Result: Team Blake. I felt like Mary Kate was more of a Danielle Bradbery (the Blake-trained teen winner from season 4) than a Brandi Carlile, so this pairing really made sense. Kelly seemed mostly okay with letting Blake have this one.
